J. Sagar & Co AX 9" x 3" Thicknesser or Planer
A sweet little machine, maximum thickness capacity of about 3 1/4", the
table is 30" by 9". It mas originally flat belt driven and when it came
to me it had 2 three phase motors fixed to it and their respective
driven pulleys also changed for vee pulleys. It has 4 major things wrong
that will need addressing to return it to original condition:
Driven pulley on cutter block - new cast iron example to make.
Loose pulley on feed works - again make a new cast iron one.
Unfortunate break in the cast iron cutter block guard, the nose of which acts as the first pressure bar - not sure what to do about this yet as i don't have the broken piece unfortunately.
Belt shifter mechanism missing completely - i have a catalogue picture
which shows some of the detail of this, so again a new effort will be
made.
The feed loose pulley has been changed for this vee pulley bolted to the
original fast pulley. A new lose pulley will need to be made. You can
also see one of the holes in the body casting that the belt shifter
mechanism was attached to. The gear train is in excellent condition.
I have not seen another thicknesser with the table raising handle fitted
in this way, very direct but a little awkward to use. It has quite a
fine thread so is easy to position precisely.
This is the building I collected the machine from.
Here you can see from the outfeed side the original square block, and
unfortunately a pair of shorter knives fitted, i don't think the
greasers for the drive rollers are correct.
The broken corner on the cast iron cutter block guard, a very
unfortunate break and i don't have the broken piece. It is completely
hidden when the guard is in its working position and unlikely to be a
problem except that the nose of this guard acts as the pressure bar
following the splined drive roller to allow for planing thin stuff.
